What is Bird’s Nest?
A precious delicacy from the East
Bird’s nest is the nest made from the solidified saliva of the edible-nest swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus). This type of swiftlet is mainly found in South-east Asia, notably Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Since the early Ming Dynasty (1405 to 1433), bird’s nest has been considered a delicacy with the properties of nourishing and strengthening the body, as well as preserving health. For these reasons, bird’s nest was the preserve of the imperial court and the nobility, and was presented as a tribute to the court. Today, it is still appreciated by Chinese for its high nutritional value.
Bird’s nest can promote wound healing and enhance the immune system. Following a pregnancy, bird’s nest can help rebuild women’s strength, while it can improve brain development of children. Bird’s nest may also help relieve respiratory ailments.
According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, “bird’s nest has a sweet taste and is mild and calm in nature, greatly boosts internal fluids and lungs, decreases phlegm and stops coughs, nourishes as well as detoxifies. Sacred medicine for treatment of tiredness and weakness".
